His leadership style: John gets things done!
John is a strong leader who takes a common sense approach and has demonstrated his capacity to work with his team on Council to get things done. He is a facilitator who has the capacity to build relationships that benefit Nelson. He always does his homework to ensure that the decision-making process considers various perspectives and that outcomes benefit the greater good of the community. Outside organizations view John as someone they can trust and someone they can work with.
His work ethic: John is a hardworking mayor who puts in countless hours to better our community!
John believes that there is no substitute for hard work and has taken time within the community, at the Regional District of Central Kootenay, at provincial meetings and through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to ensure that Nelson has a strong, non-partisan voice at all levels of government.
His passion for Nelson and Canada: John is a proud Canadian!
John is an emigrant who has never lost sight of the privilege it is to be a Canadian. John has made it his mission, through his work on various volunteer organizations and his roles as Mayor and councilor , to make a difference and to say thank you to Canada.
His experience: John has had 9 years on City Council , including 3 as mayor!
John believes that his 6 years on City Council have given him experience and understanding of the role and dynamics associated with contributing to Council. As Mayor, he is also the chairperson of the Nelson Police Board, Director, Regional District of Central Kootenay and has been elected twice as a member of the B.C. caucus to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. In his 3 years as Mayor , John has demonstrated his ability to work with representatives from all levels of government and to represent his community diplomatically, passionately and in a non-partisan manner. He is respected front person for Nelson across Canada.
His communication style: John prides himself on his communication skills!
John is an open, approachable and welcoming leader who recognizes that Nelson will be a better place if he is able to get to know and work with a range of individuals and groups. John is a visible leader who takes part in numerous community events and has his pulse on what is happening around our community. In the last term, John initiated a move to ensure that Council met in various locations as part of an “outreach” approach which fits with his communication style.
