SOME CORE GOALS: 2008-2011
During the next term, it is my intention to work with Council to stay the course on current projects and commitments. I view these as important goals for the next term:
HEALTH CARE:
Requests for proposals have now gone out for the redevelopment of the first floor, redesign of the emergency room and installation of a CT scanner.
I will continue to provide leadership and build relationships necessary which have resulted in upgrades to our hospital. I am equally committed to identifying and pursuing further enhancements to health care services, including the return of surgery to Kootenay Lake District Hospital.
CITY OF NELSON CHILDCARE INITIATIVE:
Nelson should be a place where families have all the supports they need to ensure a high quality of life. By providing leadership to finish the Child Care Center at City Hall, we will increase the number of childcare spaces in our community. The completion of this Center will serve as a catalyst to make further enhancements for our citizens and their families.
THE ECONOMY:
The economy is on people’s minds and I believe that it is vital to think about the implications of what is happening across the world. It will be more important than ever to continue to foster ongoing relationships in all areas. I want to secure grants and funds from other sources and consider ways to support and promote our local businesses.
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP:
To ensure that our environment is protected for future generations, I want to continue to improve current initiatives, including the curbside recycling program. I am committed to working with Council and City staff to ensure that all municipal projects are viewed through an “impact on the environment” lens. I intend to ensure that we live up to the commitments we have made around climate change.
COMPLETION OF THE SKATEBOARD PARK:
It is my view that the youth of our community need access to recreation facilities that address a range of interests: I will personally facilitate the development and construction of a skateboard park and commit to completion in the very near future.
WATERFRONT MASTER PLAN:
When we receive the funds from the UBCM, we will begin the development of a Waterfront Master Plan.
PROMOTION OF NELSON:
No matter where I go, people have either been to Nelson and love it or can’t wait to visit. B.C. will be host to the 2010 Olympics and we will have a chance to showcase our community and our province to the world. I intend to use the relationships I have built through my involvement with the RDCK Board, Tri-Cities Mayors’ Committee, and the FCM caucus to search for opportunities to promote and obtain appropriate grants for Nelson. I want to be able to talk about our City and the numerous opportunities that exist to tourists and potential citizens.
COMMUNICATION POLICY AND STRATEGY:
Our current communication strategies need to be enhanced to ensure that there are greater opportunities to provide input and deepen understandings of issues and decisions facing Council. Within the first 6 months, I plan to work with Council on an overall communications plan and strategy.
