- Has 3 children: Erin (Peter), Shelagh and Sean
- Self-employed since 1975
- Hobbies: Golf, skiing, fishing, hunting, hiking and the outdoors
John is an initiator: Kootenay Avalanche hockey, Side Kicks Soccer School, Nelson entry into Communities in Bloom, Coordinator, Relay for Life (Nelson).
